About the role

Are you looking to make a big difference to how Bournemouth University supports staff, students and visitors to access its campus environments? Would you like to use your skills to implement efficient systems which make sustainable travel easier for everyone? Are you interested in transport and how it can be managed to reduce carbon emissions, reduce pollution and increase health and wellbeing? If so, we can offer you a supportive team environment where you can further develop your skills.

We have an opportunity to join the Sustainability Team in a management role responsible for delivering all aspects of sustainable transport and travel planning at BU. This means you will have oversight of the delivery of the BU Travel Plan until 2025 and to a lead role in developing a new Travel Plan to 2032.

Key things to consider about this role are:

  • This is an exciting time at Bournemouth University. We have a new Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer and we are striving to achieve our sustainability targets. We believe that empowering everyone to make choices about their travel to university can help them to feel part of addressing the wider sustainability and climate crisis.

  • This job is all about making it as easy as possible for students and staff to choose sustainable travel. Its also about delivering straightforward travel solutions so that as many people as possible can access our fantastic campus environments. This all comes together in our Travel Plan and you would be responsible for developing the next version of our plan. It must align with our developing university strategy to 2032 and with our commitments to sustainability.

  • With around 18,000 students and 2,000 staff to move around the Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole region to access our three campuses (Talbot, Lansdowne and Chapel Gate), so we need someone who is organised, logical and can plan both operationally and strategically. You will have line management responsibilities for the travel and transport coordinator and parking officers and bringing them together as a team to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment is core to this role. You will also be working with external contractors including our fantastic Unibus contract. We are proud to have a fleet of 15 buses which move not just our students and staff but members of the public around the region and last year carried 1.2 million passengers!

  • We have achieved status as a gold standard Cycle Friendly Employer and this recognises the network of infrastructure we have put in place to support biking to university. This includes secure cycle storage, active travel facilities like showers, lockers and changing facilities as well as free bike maintenance sessions and the Cycle to Work scheme. We want you to continue to develop our leading approach and find new ways to support more people to realise the health and wellbeing benefits of cycling. You will have to work with external partners in the local area to achieve this, including lobbying for better cycle lanes across the conurbation.

  • Part of your role is also to ensure that we have systems which enable control of our car parks, so that spaces are available for those who need them. We are implementing a new car parking management system with autopay technology and your role will involve embedding this new system and working with the contractor to realise the benefits. You can expect to be involved operationally as well as in a management capacity for our car parking management.

  • An interest in policy and procedures is vital for this role. Overarching policies will guide our approach and these all feed into our Environmental and Energy Management System, which is our EcoCampus. As is an interest in the transport sector specific approaches so you will need to network with local and national organisations to stay up to speed and contribute to the development of the sector.

  • Commercial and analytical skills are important to, as you will be needing to deliver within a defined budget and also to report data the various schemes you own or will implement, to enable evaluation of their impact and continued value for money. You will be working in the sustainability team, which is well established and successful. And you will have the opportunity to work across the estates team with capital development and campus services teams, including reception teams, to ensure we support visitors, staff and students to have a positive experience of our campuses.

If this role sounds like the right next step for you, and you would like to find out more about it, and the wider sustainability team, then please reach out to Lois Betts, Sustainability Manager on [email protected] for a discussion.
